"Voices From Death Row" Speaking Tour
VOICES FROM DEATH ROW, the Campaign to End the Death Penalty's national
speaking tour, will launch here in Chicago on Wednesday, October 5, 7:30PM
at the University Church (5655 S. University) in Hyde Park.
Come hear the stories of men and women who have survived the horrors of
death row. Former death row prisoners, family members and activists reveal
the truth about the death penalty and the injustices of our criminal justice
system. Their stories give voices to the voiceless and put a human face on
the death penalty.
Speakers in Chicago.....
STEVEN BRIGHT is the director of the Southern Center for Human Rights, an
organization that provides legal representation to persons facing the death
penalty and to prisoners challenging unconstitutional conditions in prisons
and jails throughout the South. He has represented persons facing the death
penalty at trial, on appeals and in post-convictions proceedings since
1979..
He also teaches courses on the death penalty and criminal law at the Yale
and Harvard law schools.
MONIQUE MATTHEWS is the sister of exonerated Louisiana death row prisoner
Ryan Matthews. Arrested at age 17 for a crime he didn∂t commit and convicted
in a two-day trial riddled with racism, Ryan was finally released from
Louisiana∂s death row in June 2004. Monique became an outspoken fighter for
justice on Ryan∂s behalf and is active in the Campaign to End the Death
Penalty. Monique and her family evacuated their New Orleans home on Sunday,
the day before Hurricane Katrina struck, and made it safely to Chattanooga,
Tenn.
BILLY MOORE spent almost 17 years on Georgia's death row for a murder that
he admits committing. He had his sentence commuted to life in 1991, after
the victim's family spoke out against his execution. He was paroled a year
later, making him the only death row prisoner who admitted his guilt to have
been freed. He recently published his autobiography, I Shall Not Die:
Seventy-two Hours on Death Watch.
GLORIA JOHNSON is the mother of Illinois prisoner Montell Johnson, whose
death sentence was commuted to a forty year sentence by former Governor
George Ryan. He was diagnosed with chronic progressive Multiple Sclerosis in
200X and is paralyzed from the waist down. Gloria is fighting to get her son
transferred to a facility where his illness can be treated.

In my 7th grade tag (talented and gifted) reading class we are doing a debate on the death penalty. I was going to be on the affirmative side just to play devils advacate to what i really belive. Then we started reading about children who were killed and i couldn't do it. I couldn't listen to their arguments and still try to keep the death penalty. I have been looking on the internet and only twelve states don't have the death peanlty. I had the choice of being a judge but i wouldn't have been fair i'm glad you feel strongly about this try to make a difference for all the families and all the innocent people on death row.
